Engagement Ring Buying Guide:
FAQs for First-Time Buyers
If you’re buying an engagement ring for the first time, these are the questions most people ask before they walk through our door. From understanding diamonds to trying on styles, here’s what to know before you begin.
Can you tell me details about a ring I found online?
Yes, we can help identify and explain the details of any engagement ring you find online. If you bring in a photo, we can help break down what you’re seeing. We’ll identify the style, diamond shape, and overall design so you understand what you’re drawn to.
Carat size can be harder to judge from an image, since proportions vary from hand to hand. In-store, we’ll show you similar rings and loose diamonds so you can see how different sizes actually look and feel on your hand.
Can I try on different engagement ring styles even if I come in with a specific idea?
Absolutely. We encourage you to try on as many engagement ring styles as you’d like, even if you already have something in mind.
That’s one of the benefits of shopping with a small, family-owned store like ours — you can explore different styles in person and see what truly feels right on your hand. Many customers end up choosing something different than what they originally expected.
Can I start shopping if I don’t have a firm budget yet?
Yes, most first-time buyers start with a general range rather than a firm budget.
Trying on different styles and diamond sizes helps you understand pricing in a real-world way. From there, you can refine your budget based on what feels right to you.
Do I need to choose between lab-grown and natural diamonds before visiting?
No, you don’t need to choose between lab-grown and natural diamonds before your appointment—and it’s often better not to. We’ll walk you through both options side by side, explain the differences, and show you how each fits within your budget. Seeing them in person makes the decision much clearer.
Can you help me decide between lab-grown and natural diamonds?
Yes. We’ll talk through what matters most to you — whether that’s size, origin, long-term value, or overall appearance.
From there, we’ll show you both lab-grown and natural diamonds within your budget so you can compare them side by side and make a confident decision.
Do lab-grown and natural diamonds look different?
In most cases, no. A lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond with the same color and clarity will appear nearly identical to the naked eye. Any differences are typically not visible without specialized gemological equipment.
Can you explain color and clarity in simple terms?
Of course.
- Color refers to how white or colorless a diamond appears
- Clarity refers to natural characteristics (inclusions) inside the diamond
We’ll show you real diamonds side by side so you can see which differences are noticeable in person and which are not.
What color and clarity do most people choose?
For natural diamonds, many customers choose J color or higher and SI1 clarity or better for a strong balance of appearance and value.
For lab-grown diamonds, these factors are often less limiting, since many options are already near colorless and eye clean.*
*“Eye clean” means the diamond looks clear to the naked eye, even if it has small natural characteristics under magnification. Most people choose diamonds that are eye clean, since they look beautiful in everyday wear without paying for clarity you can’t actually see.
Will I notice the difference between clarity grades?
You’ll notice differences at the extremes, but not always between close grades.
For example, you can absolutely tell the difference between an I2 and a VVS1, since I2 diamonds have visible inclusions and reduced brilliance. But between grades like VS1 and VVS1, the difference is often not noticeable without magnification.
Can I see different carat sizes on my hand?
Yes, and this is one of the most helpful steps in the engagement ring shopping process.
Carat weight can look very different depending on your finger size and the diamond’s shape. Trying on multiple sizes helps you find the right balance of look, feel, and value.
What makes a diamond look bigger?
Carat weight matters, but it’s not the only factor that affects how large a diamond appears.
In our experience, shape and cut have a major impact. Elongated shapes like oval and marquise often appear larger than round diamonds of the same weight because they cover more surface area on the finger.
How important is diamond color?
Diamond color becomes more or less noticeable depending on the metal you choose.
In yellow gold, warmer tones in the diamond are less noticeable because the metal reflects warmth into the stone. In white gold or platinum, color differences can be more visible due to contrast.
We’ll show you both so you can decide what you prefer.
What metal should I choose?
We recommend an engagement ring be made in 14K or 18K gold (white, yellow, or rose) or platinum.
- 14K and 18K gold are alloyed metals, which makes them strong enough for everyday wear.
- 10K gold can be used in some designs, especially styles without prongs, but it is less commonly used for engagement rings because it is less durable over time compared to 14K or 18K gold.
- 24K gold is pure gold and is generally not used for engagement rings because it is too soft for daily wear.
- Platinum is a strong, naturally white metal and is often recommended for those with metal sensitivities, as well as for its long-term durability.
We’ll help you choose based on your lifestyle and preferences.
Can you help me find my ring size?
Yes. We’ll size your finger in-store for accuracy. We also include free resizing* after purchase, since many people prefer small adjustments after wearing the ring in daily life.
*One free ring sizing included, but unlimited sizing if you get the care plan.
Can I see how a wedding band will fit with my engagement ring?
Yes, and we’ll help you think ahead. Some engagement ring styles sit flush with a band, while others may require a curved or custom band to fit properly. We’ll walk you through those options, so everything works together from the start.
Do you help with insurance on my engagement ring?
Yes. We provide an appraisal document that you can use to insure your engagement ring.
We can also guide you through protection options, including care plans that help maintain and protect your ring over time.
What if I change my mind after choosing or designing a ring?
During the design process (or when selecting a custom design), you’ll review and approve every detail before production begins.
Once you approve the final CAD design, we will cast your ring exactly as it was approved. That’s why it’s important during the custom process to share any feedback or changes before final approval so you feel completely confident in the design.
If changes are requested after the ring has been made, additional costs will apply.
Can I upgrade the center stone later?
Often, yes. Some designs allow for easy upgrades, while others may require redesigning the ring. We’ll explain your options based on the setting you choose.
Can I take photos or come back later to decide?
Absolutely.
Absolutely. We encourage you to take your time when choosing an engagement ring. Most customers visit more than once before making a final decision. Our goal is to make sure you feel confident in your choice, not rushed.
